Aromatherpay may help with variety of ills

Feb. 24--Emily Walburn knows the power of aromatherapy. Walburn uses aromatherapy to complement her massage therapy practice at Franciscan Skemp's Center for Health and Healing at the Onalaska clinic.
But when she heard about a new aromatherapy product, the QueaseEASE aromatic inhaler, around the office, Walburn was a little skeptical.
Judy Aufenthie, a certified aromatherapist and health and healing coordinator at the Center for Health and Healing, had been using the nasal aromatic inhaler to help pregnant women with nausea and cancer patients with nausea from chemotherapy.
Walburn, who is pregnant, started using the inhaler because she came to work every day feeling nauseous. "I felt so sick and was throwing up some days, I thought nothing could help me," she said. "But I never got sick after smelling the inhaler. Within a minute, I'd feel remarkably better, and it lasted for a good four hours."
She said smells that she couldn't stand before now don't bother her.
Walburn said sometimes she didn't even have to take anti-nausea medication after using the inhaler. "It really helped me for three months," she said.
Aufenthie said she has used the inhaler more with pregnant women than cancer patients. She said research has shown that essential oils -- peppermint, spearmint, lavender and ginger -- reduce nausea and vomiting.
Aromatherapy uses fragrant oils to provide a calming sensation, Aufenthie said. Oils, infused with scents such as lavender, can be applied to your skin during a massage or the oils can be added to bathwater, she said.
Fragrant oils also can be heated to release their scents into the air.
Mayo Clinic uses aromatherapy in combination with medication to help patients reduce their nausea, Aufenthie said.
"Aromatherapy empowers patients to take control over their nausea," she said. "You take a couple whiffs when you get nausea, and you don't have to wait for your medication to work."
Aufenthie and Walburn use all sorts of aromatherapy products now stocked at the Onalaska clinic to treat anxiety, stress, pain and other symptoms. Walburn said she has used aromatherapy to treat back pain and headaches.
"A common use is for pain in the muscles," Aufenthie said. "Aromatherapy can create this peace and calming effect."
Aromatherapy products do not need approval by the Food and Drug Administration because no specific claims are made for the treatment of cancer or other diseases.
It also is not regulated by state law, and there is no licensing required to practice aromatherapy in the United States. Professionals often combine aromatherapy training with another field in which they are licensed, for example, massage therapy, registered nursing, acupuncture or naturopathy.
But Aufenthie said people should make sure their aromatherapist has some training in the use of essential oils.

BREATH: THE LIFE FORCE
I recently read this article and realized that the breath is a more amazing tool and resource than I ever imagined. Did you know that your digestion is ifluenced by which nostril is more open than the other at some point during your day? Read on....
By Sandra Anderson, Senior Editor, Yoga+ Magazine
The nose–much maligned and the object of endless jokes–is remarkably versatile. It’s handy for breathing and smelling and sneezing and holding up our sunglasses. The studious keep it pressed to the grindstone, the arrogant carry it in the air, and the confrontive are fond of standing nose-to-nose.
Go with the Flow
We pay through the nose when we run up our credit cards; if we’re easily offended, our noses are often out of joint. And the yogis have yet another way to press the proboscis into service: as a barometer for when to eat and when not to. If you’ve been practicing yoga for a while, you’ve probably discovered that sometimes the breath flows more freely in the right nostril while at other times the left nostril seems clearer. (The breath flows equally through both nostrils only when we are perfectly tranquil.)
The free-flowing nostril is called the dominant nostril. Observing this phenomenon in themselves, the yogis noticed that when the breath flows more freely in the left nostril the effect is cooling, predisposing them to receptive pursuits such as studying, or some other quiet form of sustained effort; they found right-nostril dominance heating, predisposing them to active pursuits like playing sports, giving a lecture, or eating.
According to their experience, appetite is best and food tastier if meals are taken when the right nostril is dominant; but when the left nostril is dominant, digestive fire tends to be low and it’s best not to eat. Sound far-fetched? Do what the yogis did: conduct your own experiments. When you have a hearty appetite, notice which nostril is dominant.
If you sit down to a meal when the left nostril is more open, how does the food taste? When you’re really enjoying what you’re eating, pause for a moment and see which nostril is flowing more freely. When you sit down to a meal but aren’t really interested in eating, which nostril is open? Pay attention and you may find the solution to mild indigestion right under your nose!
If You’ve Blown It…
You’ve just eaten and now you’re feeling stuporous? Unless you’ve stuffed yourself beyond reason, it’s likely that the left nostril is dominant. The solution is simple: lie down on your left side and relax. In a few minutes, your right nostril will open and your digestive fire will kick in. Stay put for 10 or 15 minutes before going about your business and all will be well.

YOGA AND ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils naturally complement yoga by supporting physical and mental strength and focus through the science of aromatherapy. Essential oils are extremely versatile and have many practical applications in yoga, including techniques for complementing pranayama, meditation, relaxation, post-practice, and for cleansing and purifying. WHAT BETTER GIFT TO GIVE THAN THE GIFT OF HEALTH. NINGXIA RED IS JUST PERFECT FOR YOUR LOVED ONES OF ALL AGES. HERE'S JUST ONE REASON WHY.
The Science Behind Ningxia Red
One of the most intriguing studies conducted in China found that the wolfberry was able to reverse the signs of aging by lowering levels of damaged proteins and increasing interleukin levels.
A January 2005 Stanford University study found that people with the weakest ability to scavenge superoxide free radical lived 35% shorter lives than other controls. This free radical is linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory conditions.
Ningxia Red's ability to absorb four of the most prevalent free-radicals found in the human body is superior. Its ability to absorb the superoxide free radical in the human body is many times more effective than any other health drink.

With daily news reports warning of a Swine Flu pandemic, people are more concerned than ever about how to protect themselves and their families.
Here are just a few helpful hints on how to combat H1N1 Swine Flu:
Many nutrients and drugs can help prevent viral infections and hasten their resolution when they do occur.
Nutraceuticals that may protect against flu include vitamin D, garlic (both aged and non-aged forms), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), lactoferrin, zinc lozenges, and melatonin.
Pharmaceuticals that can help combat flu include cimetidine, Tamiflu®, Relenza®, ribavirin, and amantadine.
Individuals who suspect they may have the flu should take action as soon as possible to fight the viral infection. Antiviral medications are typically only effective if initiated within the first 24-48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Yoga
I personally find the benefits of yoga far exceed the frustration of fitting it in my life or even being challenged to execute the asanas (positions) exactly the way the yoga instructors does. My personal practice is 1 day a week and Bikram is my preference. I go Sunday morning at 9am or 10am, depending on how early I feel to get out of the bed, and that's only because Sunday is the 1 day in the week that I'm dedicated to getting up because I want to not because I have to.

THERAPEUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR THE FLU
PREPARE YOUR FAMILY FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING EXPOSED TO THE FLU BY SUPPORTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEMS WITH ESSENTIAL OILS. SOME SUGGESTED RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFFERED by James Niederland, LCSW Psychotherapist & Wellness Consultant
Here are a couple more recommendations I have for combating the flu. First and foremost, eliminate fast foods, sugar and highly processed foods from your diet as they deplete your immune system and your body. Secondly, supplement your diet with all the essential 90 nutrients that your body requires to function properly. There are also two other Young Living products that I recommend: K & B for its ability
to help regulate the build up of water in the body and the ImmuneTune, which
can help to build immune system function.

HEALTHY TIDBIT - CANDLES
Candles that emit carcinogens:
from: Care2 written by Melissa Breyer
As the days start their slow climb toward the winter solstice I always find myself lighting more and more candles to compensate for the diminishing sunlight. I love the warmth and flicker of light they can infuse a room with, rooms otherwise flat by the increasingly muted autumn and winter skies. Yet while candles can create a lovely mood, some types also create toxic emissions that are hardly worth the ambiance.
The candle culprits? Paraffin wax candles. These candles, which are made from petroleum, are a source of known human carcinogens and indoor pollution, researchers said in a study presented last month at the American Chemical Society’s national meeting in Washington, D.C. In the study, R. Massoudi and Amid Hamidi found that candles made from beeswax or soy, although more expensive, are safer because they do not release potentially harmful pollutants.
“An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you,” Hamidi said in a news release from the American Chemical Society. “But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an unventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems.” Hamidi also said that some people who believe they have an indoor allergy or respiratory irritation may actually be reacting to pollutants from burning candles. They noted that ventilation can help reduce the level of pollutants in closed rooms–but I say, better yet: switch to a healthier alternative!
Another part of the healthy candle discussion is centered around fragrance–synthetic fragrance, by which the majority of candles are made fragrant by. A study performed by the EPA found that numerous potentially hazardous chemicals are commonly used in synthetic fragrance, including acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool, and methylene chloride.
So, your best bet? Unscented, 100 percent beeswax candles with a cotton wick are the safest option–but aren’t suitable for vegan candle-lovers who should opt for unscented soy-based candles. There are also a number of other vegetable wax based candles on the market; just make sure you are avoiding paraffin and synthetic fragrance
For additional sweet and healthy scents to use and enhance your beeswax or soy candles, use essential oils by: Young Living Essential Oils, www.youngliving.org/stephaniewalcot

Exercise Minimizes Weight Re-Gain After Weight Loss
Content Works
10-12-09
Oct 09, 2009 (Voice of America News/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- DATELINE: Durham, North Carolina
Paul MacLean raises a lot of fat rats. MacLean is a professor at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine where he studies the metabolisms of rats to learn about the metabolisms of people.
He says one of the biggest problems doctors face in treating fat patients, is getting them to keep weight off after they've lost it. MacLean's fat rats may hold a clue as to why that's so.
The experiment called for rats to eat like people
MacLean says the best way to learn about gaining weight is to get rats to act as much like people as possible.
"We give them too much fat, and we put them on an energy restricted low-fat diet just like humans go through," MacLean said.
"Once we have a weight reduced rat, we model the holidays and allow them to go off of their diets and we look at various aspects of their metabolism," he added.
After allowing the rats to gorge on food and regain weight, MacLean divided them into two groups. One group remained sedentary. The other exercised daily.
After weight loss, exercise suppresses appetite
What MacLean found was that when he exercised the animals by giving them a daily bout of treadmill exercise, similar to what a lot of people do, it changed their metabolism.
"It lowered their hunger that they were experiencing on a daily basis," MacLean said. "And it reduced the amount of weight gain early on, as they relapsed to obesity and ultimately lowered the body weight. So it changed their biology," he said.
MacLean added that the exercising rats didn't stay thinner because they were burning calories every day. That might have played a part in their weight control, he said, but the exercise program actually changed the biological drive to eat, and suppressed it.
"We were changing how they regulated body weight," he explained. MacLean says that may mean exercise can help people stay on their diet and resist the temptation to, "succumb to those biological urges of hunger pains that they feel on a daily basis after they've lost weight."
Of course, MacLean pointed out, people are different from rats; humans don't just eat because they're hungry. They eat to socialize, or when they see delicious looking food or when others pressure them to just try a little bite. But he said, people could react just like rats in that when they exercise, they might keep that weight off.
MacLean's research is published in the American Journal of Physiology " Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.

WALNUTS: BENEFITS THE BRAIN AND HEART
Just read this article from one of my favorite websites, LEF.org and in addition found that the subject matter gave me more insight into a food that happens to be great for me, simply because I'm a 'O' blood type. Read on.
Abuja, Sep 18, 2009 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Nuts generally have become popular as all round source of nutrition and are favoured by those who exercise regularly as a good source of protein and energy. Walnuts which are popularly known as awusa or asala in Yoruba, arinsa in Igbira add extra nutrition, flavor and crunch to one's meal.
These nuts, which are harvested in December and are available all year round come from an ornamental tree that is highly priced for its beauty. The walnut kernel consists of two bumpy lobes that look like abstract butterflies. The lobes are off white in colour and covered by a thin, light brown skin. They are particularly attached to each other while the kernel is enclosed in round or oblong shells that are brown or black in colour and they are hard.
Although the nuts are said to have a high fat content, it plays a role in the provision of a balance diet; with beneficiary nutritional contents covering all the important food groups.
When it comes to their health benefits, walnuts definitely are regarded as a "brain food" not only because of the wrinkled brain like appearance of their shells but because of their high concentration of omega 3 fats.
A nutritionist, Dr Kabir az-Zubair, Director, Molecular Biology & Bioinformatics of National Biotechnology Development Agency, Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, said the human brain is made up of more than 60% structural fats and for the brain cells to function properly, these structural fats need to be primarily the omega 3 fats which are mostly found in walnuts.
"Walnut is an excellent source of omega 3 essential fatty acids, a special type of protective fat the body cannot manufacture. It has many health benefits ranging from cardiovascular protection, to the promotion of better cognitive function and the anti-inflammatory benefit that is useful for Asthma patients, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory skin diseases such as Eczema and psoriasis; walnuts also contain an anti-oxidant compound called ellagic acid that supports the immune system and appears to have several anti-cancer properties," he said.
These nutritious nuts are also important source of monounsaturated fats amounted to 15% of the fats found in walnuts so adding it to ones diet is an important step in improving cardiovascular health. Studies on the dietary value of walnut show that increasing the dietary intake of walnuts as favourable effects on high cholesterol levels and other cardiovascular risk factors.
In addition to their heart protective monounsaturated fats, walnuts concentration of omega-3 essential fatty acids is also responsible for the favourable effects walnut consumption produces on cardiovascular risk factors.
Omega-3s benefit the cardiovascular system by assisting in preventing erratic heart rhythms, making blood less likely to clot inside arteries (which is the proximate cause of most heart attacks) and improve the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to potentially harmful (LDL) cholesterol. Omega-3s also reduce inflammation, which is a key component in the processes that turn cholesterol into artery clogging plaques.
Walnuts also contain relatively high levels of L-arginine, an essential amino acid which becomes a special import in hypertensive persons. Human body according to experts converts l-arginine into nitric oxide, a chemical that helps keep the inner walls of blood vessels smooth and allows blood vessels to relax. Since individuals with hypertension find it difficult to maintain normal nitric oxide levels which may also lead to other significant health issues such as diabetes and heart problems, walnuts can serve as a great addition to their diets.
In a research published by the British Journal of Nutrition which identified several nuts among plant foods with highest total antioxidant content, suggests that walnuts and chestnuts have the highest antioxidant content of tree nuts with walnuts delivering more than 20mmol antioxidant per 3ounces (100gm).
The research concluded that, consumption of nuts at least 4 times in a week showed a 37% reduced risk of coronary heart disease while each additional serving of nuts per week shows 8.3% reduced risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease, intake of a handful of walnuts at least 4times in a week is recommended for persons suffering from these diseases.
Prevention and control of high blood pressure is also one of the benefits derived from eating walnuts because it is gathered that individuals whose diets provide greater amount of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid have lower blood pressure than those who consume less and walnuts has been identified as an excellent source of this essential fats.
It also improves the cholesterol profile in persons with type 2 diabetes. In patients with type 2 diabetes, a daily ounce of walnuts in a diet in which 30% of calories came from fat related into a significant improvement in subject's cholesterol profile. The nuts are found to reduce levels of several molecules that promote atherosclerosis.
Preventing gallbladder disease may be as easy as having a handful of walnuts as part of ones diet or tossing some walnuts on salad because it helps in prevention of gallstones in women. For a better night sleep, sprinkling ones dinner with a handful of walnuts is good because it is a source of bio-available melatonin - a hormone produced by the pineal gland, which is involved in inducing and regulating sleep and it's also a powerful antioxidant in bio - available form, making the perfect evening meal for a natural good night sleep.
Apart from the dietary benefit of walnuts, straw-coloured clear oil can also be extracted from fresh walnuts which must be protected from the light and oxidant agents because it becomes rancid easily. This oil is used as a tonic for children and aged people as well as a dry agent for painting for the rapidity by which colours dry in it.
The nutritional value of walnuts can be likened to that of cheese because of its high content of proteins and fats. Walnuts have a high source of essential unsaturated fatty acids such as alfa-linoleic acid and their contents in proteins and vitamins are good, especially in vitamins B and E groups.
Maintenance of healthy levels of melatonin is important for everyone over the age of 40 since the amount of the hormones produced by the human body decreases significantly as humans age. This reduction in antioxidant protection may be related to the development of free radical related diseases later in life; thus walnuts are highly recommended for everybody for healthy living.

PURE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR YOUR LAUNDRY!!!!!
Young Living Essential Oils distributor Mary Lou Jacobsen submitted the following tip to the Young Living Newsletter PS I recently did the same thing:
“I left a batch of towels in the washer on a hot day and when I returned home they had gone sour. Even after rewashing them, I was not happy with the way they smelled. So I added a few drops of Purification® essential oil blend to the batch and rewashed them. I loved they way they smelled. Now, I keep a bottle of Purification above my washer and add a few drops every time I wash my towels.”

A VIEW ON TAP WATER
Consumers are wasting billions of dollars a year on billions of gallons of bottled water in large part because advertising spin has led them to believe that water in a bottle is safer or better than tap water.
Truth is, tap water generally is just as safe, clean, and healthy as bottled water, and in many cases more so. In fact, the federal government requires far more rigorous and frequent safety testing and monitoring of municipal drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency requires that utility companies test municipal water hundreds of times per month, while the Food and Drug Administration requires only one water test per week by bottling companies.
Bottled water causes many equity, public health, and environmental problems. Beverage companies often take water from municipal or underground sources that local people need. As much as 40 percent of bottled water comes from the tap. Producing plastic bottles uses energy and emits toxic chemicals. Transporting the bottled water spews pollution into the air, adding to global climate change.
Taking Back the Tap Helps Your Health, Your Pocketbook, and Our Environment
By turning to your home tap, you’ll avoid the arsenic, microbes, toxins, and other pollutants that tests have found in various bottled water brands. What’s more, you’ll face less risk of exposure to chemicals that could leach from the plastic bottle into the water.
Turning to tap water could help you save money, as well. Tap water costs about $0.002 per gallon compared to the $0.89 to $8.26 per gallon charge for bottled water.
Giving up bottled water also helps our environment. Annual production of the plastic (PET or polyethylene) bottles to meet U.S. consumer demand for bottled water takes the equivalent of about 17.6 million barrels of oil, not including the cost of transporting the bottled water to consumers. That more or less equals the amount of oil required to fuel more than one million vehicles on U.S. roads each year. Worldwide bottling of water uses about 2.7 million tons of plastic each year. And in the end, about 86 percent of the empty plastic water bottles in the United States land in the garbage instead of being recycled.
